With a multitude of single phase UPS to select from, the selection process can be confusing. Three general topologies exist for single phase UPS, standby, line interactive and on-line. Standby is least protection and lowest cost. Think of standby as being a straight piece of wire feeding whatever utility power is available to the load with some surge protection. When utility power fails, the UPS transfers to battery in about 1/4 cycle (4 mSec.) Line interactive is the next step up and provides voltage regulation to somewhat clean up variations of voltage in utility supplied power. The same 1/4 cycle transfer concept applies to line interactive.
If a generator, particularly small or midsize generators (<100 kW) are involved both standby and line interactive may stay on battery as generator frequency varies.
The highest quality UPS to protect mission critical loads are on-line UPS wherein incoming power is converted to DC and then reconverted to clean AC power. As the DC circuit is always in use there is no transfer delay with online systems and the AC-DC-AC conversion process virtually eliminates and voltage flucuation to the load regardless of utility/generator variances. 1) XVT are typically the lowest cost
2) The 5110, 5115 and 5115 rackmount are smaller sizes, generally under 1500 VA, and lower power factor designs meaning they provide lower watts for a given kVA size. That is an older design concept that may cause the UPS to become fully loded before one would expect. In essence the kW capacity limits the real capability to power modern computers.
3) The 5130 are mid sized 1250 to 3000 VA UPS that are designed for a higher 0.9 output power factor providing more real capacity for a given VA rating.
4) The 5125 provides higher power UPS up to 6000 VA or 6 kVA
